FALL/WINTER FASHION TRENDS 2017

Fashion weeks are held two times per year, February and September. The main purpose of fashion week is to showcase some of the elite fashion designers, brands pieces, and the trends for the seasons in an elaborate manner on the runway. The first fashion week of the year is held in February, where you will see designs from the designer’s fall/winter collection of the same year. The second one in September shows fashion and tends for the following year’s spring/summer collection. Fashion weeks are held in mainly in four major cities around the world New York, Paris, London, and Milan. Today we are going to be taking a look at what the Fall/Winter 2017 runway shows are telling us about what the fashion trends are going to be.

1. Red!!

Red is the official color story of the season. As most designers showed something red in their collection this season. The runways were flooded with looks of red ensembles, most of which were very bold, head to toe looks. The trend has been referred to as Power Red by some prominent and influential fashion magazines and stylists. It can be a bit overwhelming for some people to rock red from head to toe. I guess that’s why the trend is referred to as Power Red. So for those of us who will not be able to pull off the head to toe power red look here are a few ways to incorporate the trend into your outfits this season without it being overpowering. You can mix shades of red (darker shades will give a more subtle look) as well as try a red dress with black boots and a black coat like Victoria Beckham did for one of her runway looks. You can just add some red lips, red accessories, and a red handbag to your outfit maybe some red shoes. Whatever you are comfortable with.

2. Plaid/Checked

Plaid is one of the more popular trends this season. We have seen it on the runway mostly as power suits, office wear, and outerwear. Most people think of the 90s when they think plaid but it is a revival of the 70s checked/plaid prints are what you saw on the runway. Plaids have been reintroduced in a more colorful and modern way. Like the red trend, this season you can wear plaid from head to toe or limit it to being a statement piece as a part of your outfit by just adding it to one section. Plaids are timeless and very versatile. I would say plaid is a staple for your wardrobe.

3. Chocolate Brown

Every year and every season we hear what color or shade is the new black. For this season you have brown as your new black. Think dark brown lip liner days from the 90s. Chocolate brown is the most popular shade I’ve seen of the brown trend but runway looks are mixed and matched with different shades. Here is another trend that we have seen the head to toe looks from on the runways. So if you want to incorporate brown into your outfits this season you can rock it big and bold from head to toe like the runway looks. You can also mix and match shades of brown together. It also goes well with white or black.

Max Mara, Balmain, Emilio Pucci

4. Fur

It’s the fall/winter seasons so of course, fur is going to be on trend but, not the average dark cold colors we have seen in the past though. Quite a number of unusually paired color combination this season when it came to the furs. It’s kind of wild and fun. Some looks are still pretty vintage classic but not dull. If it never really gets super cold where you would wear a full-on fur coat or jacket, you can invest in a pair of fur cuffs. Just add them to the ends of your sleeves. That one way to incorporate furs this season.

5. Feathers

We are going to be seeing feathers everywhere this season. From chic cocktail dresses to red-carpet gowns and dramatic outerwear. Feathers are a must have. The feather element gives the pieces a touch of couture and delicacy combined. Are the pieces wardrobe friendly and practical for the average person? Not really. You can get pieces with synthetic feathers that might be more washable.

Alexander McQueen, Alberta Ferretti, Mary Katrantzou

6. Floral Prints

This season came with a lot of floral print. From couch inspired prints to an embroidered rose or rose prints on a rather usually basic pieces. These prints are very bold and gives off a vintage vibe. Like this rose embroidery on denim pants or a rose print dress from Adam Selman to embroidery flower dress from Gucci. You can get these look everywhere basically. So if you are not one to rock a fully floral look, you can just add a layer of it to your outfit. You can also add shoes, bottom or jacket with rose embroideries or a fully floral top or dress under a solid color coat or jacket.

Adam Selman, Gucci, Mulberry

7. Fringe

Can somebody say movement? Yes, fringe is here in full force and I am here for it. When you think fringe and fashion you think the 20s. It is here in various colors and lengths. The designers got really creative with the return of fringes using them mostly has hem detail. I have to say Balmain’s fall/winter collection dominated the fringe game. If you don’t necessarily like all that movement on your garments you can get a frilled accessory, bags, boots, earrings, scarf, etc.

The first two are Balmain, Céline, Prabal Gurung

8. Denim on Denim on Denim

Denim will always be on trend but, right now denim on denim is the center of attention. I’m not surprised, last year there were tons of oversized denim trench type coats and kimonos. Even though for years stylist after stylist have said denim on denim was against the fashion rules. The pieces sent down the runway were from head to toe and tailored to perfection. I mean we were always in denim but to look trendy this season just add another piece or layer to what you are already wearing. You can also be a part of the trend by mixing textures and shades of denim.

Christian Dior, Marc Jacobs, Y Project

9. Silver/Glitter

By now you must have realized that all the celebrities outfits are sparkling whether on stage or on the red carpets. Yes, it’s a metallic sparkly fall/winter. Silver seen on so many runways this season has been paired with the techniques of padding and quilting to give you some of the most elaborate looks you’ve seen on this season’s runways. Then you have the more subtle elegant looks which I am here for by the way. You can get your silver glitter look by rocking a metallic silver dress or a metallic top to your outfit. A pair of glitter or silver shoe will fit well in your closet for this look and if you already have them pull them out and dust them off. Silver and glitters usually goes well with most things.

Saint Laurent, Chanel, Jonathan Simkhai

10. Belts

We are not just using belts to keep our clothes up this season. Belts of all sizes shapes and designs have returned as a decorative accessory. We are using them to show proportions and keep our waistlines clinched (trying to stay snatched hunny lol). Belts usually go with everything, they usually give a garment some character. On the runway, we have seen the belts mostly worn at or a little above the waist. With most of the look, the belts are the same color as the outfits. You can wear the same belts over a coat for Showing up the silhouette. You can literally wear a belt over any piece of clothing this season.
