THE POLKA DOT

Hey guys…. Hope everyone is doing great. It’s been a while since we’ve talked but, we back in business baby…..

THE POLKA DOT PATTERN
Today we are going to be taking a look at one of my favorite patterns. You guessed it right!!! We are talking about the polka dot. The typical black and white dotted (these days they are multi-colored) pattern. The polka dot pattern has been around for a very long time. I mean, they are dots and they are black and white which is a given. They must have been around since forever, thus, giving us time to play around with them and find different ways of wearing and styling it. Making it one of the most classic and versatile patters to grace the face of this earth.                                     Celebs slaying polka dots

A BRIEF HISTORY

Though the dots I assumed must have been around since the beginning of time they were not always referred to as polka dots. The American women’s magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book was the first to print the term, in an 1857 description of a “scarf of muslin, for light summer wear, surrounded by a scalloped edge, embroidered in rows of round polka dots.” The word “polka” in the polish language means “Polish woman” and, in the Czech language, it translates to “little woman or girl.” No wonder the print is so feminine. Regardless of what form the garment constructed with a polka dotted fabric takes on you will always get a feminine vibe. If you incorporate polka dot pieces into your outfits you are instantly assured the look is soft, chic and feminine. Find more about the history of Polka dots here.

The polka dot print has stood the test of time. While several patterns have come and go with trends, it has earned its place as one the most classic patterns of all times. Every season designers try to find different and interesting ways to reinvent the patter. They do so by adding colors and/or playing with a variety of different size dots. It’s just always so interesting to see what we do with polka dots thus making it one of my favorite patterns to rock. It does, however, takes a certain level of boldness to rock the dotted pattern.

WAYS TO STYLE POLKA DOT

I have not met a polka dot I didn’t like. There is some vague childhood memory of me wearing them when I was younger along with Brian Hyland’s hit song, “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” by the ways these are the only words I know to that song. lol

I love a polka dot because she is such a statement piece. Personally, I live to mix and match patterns. Sometimes with other patterns but mostly with solids. A solid gives a sense of balance and sophistication. So, you will very seldom if at all, see me in polka dot from head to toe. Unless I am trying to overstate (Just made “overstate” up by the way not sure if it’s a real word but you get the picture.). I love a simple, chic, elegant polka dot top and sometimes a very well-constructed dress.

Friends that slay together

Yet again we have uncovered another absolute must have! A true wardrobe staple. Personally, when rocking polka dot I wear it on top. Why? Well because I have small boobs and wider hips. So when I wear the patterns on top it pulls the attention there creating the illusion of me being busty I usually do that with most prints/patterns (yes there is a difference) when pairing with solids.

Insightful piece. I never knew that it had a different impact whether you wear the polka dot at the top or bottom. I learned that and will definitely take that into consideration when selecting polka dot. Thanks a lot.
