NEW SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY

OMG guys… What’s up? It’s been sigh… such a long time. So long I feel I have forgotten how to write. Hold on a few minutes let me go read a few old blog posts and see if I can remember my writing style.

You know what forget that I’m just going to allow the new and improved me out to show my growth while I have been away. I mean it is 2020 right? We got to let it all hang.

Speaking of new and improved can we talk about the new direction in which this blog is heading? Yes! You heard me right we switching it up a bit over here but not too much. We are heading in a more sustainable direction. To be more specific we will be focusing more on sustainable fashion. Yes sis, WE, you and I. I’m taking you on this journey with me. It will be fun as we are going to have to be in our creativity bags a lot more.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?

The concept of sustainability is very broad therefore making it difficult to define. According to UN World Commission on Environment and Development: “sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”  in other words we are trying not to mess everything up for generations to come by being over consumers and just plain old greedy.

MILLENNIAL ME BLOG

When I created the Millennial Me blog it was supposed to be a fashion and lifestyle blog. The lifestyle aspect would include veganism and fitness. I was creating a blog where I would showcase the world through the perspective/lens of a millennial. Especially being on the lower spectrum of the millennial chart. I invited you to “come experience this illusion call life with me” because I think life is what you make it. Considering the elements you face on a daily basis of course.

With all that planning my passion for expression through creativity and fabric (fashion) seemed to have taken over the blog. I became a lazy cook and was missing gym sessions. When I did do any of the lifestyle stuff I was too caught up in the moment to create content.

You: Ugh… so much gibberish sis. What does any of this have to do with sustainability?

Me: Hold on sis, I’m getting there. Let me finish this story J

So yea fashion became more dominant so I had to be pulling out these looks Hun. At least I wanted to but, my taste level was too expensive for my own pockets Hun. I mean that in the boujiest way possible LOL RTFO. For real, I’m not too much of the spandex catsuit type girl. I like the feeling of 100% silk on my skin. The flow of rayon and, how 100% wool sits on my body. The production and pollution of manufacturing these fabrics are for a different post for a different time sis. I also notice that the pieces lasted longer for me than a lot of what I got from fast fashion brands.

This predicament led me to fulfill my fashion need sustainably starting at the thrift store. Plus I already had an obsession with vintage. So thrift spot was right up my alley. Ye sis! It was not a conscious or deliberate decision to go in this direction. I was unaware of so many things. I literally stumbled upon “sustainable fashion”. Though in Jamaica that’s all we knew; Repeat our clothes because my parents were not buying us new pieces every week or every month. We could not afford that. If a button broke, reattach it. If you had a rip, sew that shit up. Lol find a piece of fabric and patch it up or something.

Thinking of it now practicing sustainability is really a first world problem because “poorer countries” have been in their sustainable bags. Well I mean it has now become every countries problem due to resources and labor being exploited. That’s another post for a different day sis.

CONSCIOUS SUSTAINABILITY

I made a conscious decision to support and advocate for sustainability. Especially, in fashion after coming across a few documentaries, panel discussions, pulling up some podcasts, and doing some research. After learning the things I did I could not consciously and willing continues to support fast unsustainable fashion. I was already practicing sustainability in other areas of my life. It was time to apply it to this aspect. Keep in mind there are levels to this shit and we grow and learn every day. As well as we are not perfect but, once you can actually help it, put some effort into reducing your carbon footprint on this planet.

With all that being said it’s safe to say not too much will be changing. Except for the fact that we are going to be more sustainable and you are going to be seeing me more often as we experience this illusory reality together through the lens of a millennial.

Next week we will get into some of the different ways to practice sustainability and sustainable fashion. See you next post xoxo
