A Maxi Skirt is one of the first pieces of garment I learned to make after growing into the realization that a career in Fashion is what I really wanted. Actually, the maxi skirt drove me to delve deeper into exploring my creativity and go further with pursuing my passion. I’ll tell you a story.
Tell you a story
My friend and I were on Instagram one day and we came across a profile with the most beautiful women all rocking these oversized, floor-length maxi skirts made from some elaborate printed African fabric. There went the rest of our evening just scrolling in nothing but the admiration of these pieces. Hours went by as we hopped from one profile to the next via tags just absorbing all of this creativity and of course I needed on for sure. I was a definite must-have, an essential to be precise.
IN PURSUIT
The following day I went out just shopping around to see if I could get my hands on one of these skirts. to my disappointment, there was none in any of the stores I visited. A few weeks after I did find a store that sold them with the specific prints and structure I wanted, only to come to the realization that I could not afford these quality pieces. of course, I was disappointed but then the lightbulb was switched on in my head “I can make on a these” I thought. I walk right out the store into a fabric store and to my delight, dozens of beautiful African printed fabrics at affordable prices too. A few days before this discovery my same friend informed me that for her birthday she wanted a group of us to go out for dinner. So you know I already had my look in mind and these fabrics were going to make that a reality for me.
I went home showed my mom the pictures told here I wanted to make myself one of these skirts and she said “we can figure it out.” Naturally youtube played a big role. We watched a few videos then started our mission to maxi skirt perfection. Because I did not own a sewing machine at that time, let alone knowing how to use one we cut and stitched with our hands.
Mission accomplished
The skirt turned out perfect and fit like a glove. After I saw how simple it was to make we decided we would make one for my friends birthday present as well and that was executed with ease.
showed up to the dinner party looking the way I did my friends were going crazy. They love the look on me and after finding out I made it, everybody wanted one.
I posted a few pictures on my Instagram and Facebook profiles and boy, the messages started coming in. I then created a separate page for the skirts and started selling them. Since then there was no looking back, I went and bought a sewing machine. I bought tons of fabrics and watch loads of youtube videos in pursuit of learning sewing techniques.
